What is the Procedure for Teeth Whitening?

Laser Teeth Whitening

This procedure takes up to two hours at your dentist’s office. Before treatment begins, the dentist will compare the colour of your teeth with a shade chart—and then again after treatment, so you can see exactly how many shades lighter your teeth have become.

Teeth are then cleaned to remove stains and tartar, and the mouth is prepared by placing a rubber dam around the teeth to keep the bleaching gel away from the soft tissues in our mouth. You will be given protective eye goggles to protect eyes from the brightness of the laser beam.

Next, the dentist applies the bleaching gel to your teeth. At this point, the different whitening systems may work in slightly different ways. Some systems only require one application of the gel, but it stays on the teeth for 45 minutes. Others require multiple applications, with the gel staying on the teeth for only 15 minutes each application before being removed.

The laser is applied to the gel to activate the bleaching agents, the gel is removed after the recommended amount of time. The process is repeated again another couple of times, if the system your dentist uses requires it.

After the final application, the dentist cleans your teeth again to remove all traces of the gel before showing you the shade chart so you can assess you many shades lighter your teeth have become.

At Home Whitening Kits

These will require two visits to the dentist, requiring tailor-made trays that fit over your teeth to hold the bleaching gel.
