When Is the Best Time to Visit a Phuket Dentist?

November through May are the peak tourism months in Phuket. The weather is more temperate (in the lower 80's Fahrenheit; 27°C) with calmer seas than in monsoon season. Off-season–May through October–tends to be wetter, although visitors usually experience intermittent showers with sunny breaks throughout the day. Off-peak months bring bargains on flights and lodging, and many Phuket dentists offer special discounts during this time. Patients planning to travel during the peak season should schedule travel and appointments well in advance.

Is Phuket Wheelchair Friendly?

Phuket may prove a challenge for wheelchair accessibility, as pavements and sidewalks are uneven and without dropped kerbs. Day and nighttime crowds make navigating difficult, and most Patong beaches are not equipped with ramps.

What is the Downside? What Should I Know About Visiting Phuket?

Patong is not for everyone: prices here tend to be more expensive than elsewhere on the island, even with hard bartering, as the locals take advantage of newly-arrived, disorientated tourists. Quieter beach destinations, such as Tri Tra Beach, Freedom Beach and Paradise Beach as a few minutes down the road.

As when visiting other destinations, remember not to leave your common-sense at home.

Phuket is renowned for its stunning scenery, including remote rainforests on Ko Yao, the limestone cliffs of Phang Nga Bay, the picturesque islands such as Phi Phi, the hipster capital Phuket Town and of course, its miles of shimmering white beaches dipping into azure-colored water.

In addition to the natural beauty of the beaches and the nightlife in Patong, an array of options cater to tourists of all interests. For the active and curious, Phuket offers a multitude of activities, including bike riding, safaris, white water rafting, bungee jumping, elephant rides and Thai cookery lessons. For those who want to take it extra easy, cruises, Thai massage and spas provide Thai-style indulgence, relaxation and recuperation. For classic shoppers, the market stalls in Old Phuket Town will not disappoint.

Travelling to Phuket

Phuket International Airport is Thailand’s second-largest airport, after Bangkok.  Travelers can choose from a wide inventory of flights and fares from Australia, New Zealand, the EU and the US, as well as other international airports in the region, including Jakarta, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Domestic budget flights to Bangkok and other Thai cities also fly from here.

From Phuket International Airport, taxis are plentiful, and the Phuket Airport Bus Express runs approximately every 75 minutes from around 8am-9pm, stopping at areas including Patong, Karon and Kata Beaches.

Getting Around Phuket

Phuket is a large island and you will need to use some form of transport if you want to make the most of what the island has to offer. Public transport is very limited, although a variety of available options are cheap and commonplace.

Taxi: Comes in three flavors: metered taxis, unmetered taxis and the bright red, and sometimes yellow three-wheeled "tuk-tuks." When available, metered taxis are a much better option and are more comfortable and usually cheaper than tuk-tuks. However, during busy periods even these drivers will ignore the meter and demand a flat fare. Tuk-tuks have no meter, so always agree a price and bargain hard before you get in. You'll see unofficial taxi shacks on the beach, usually supported by a hotel. They are usually more expensive than tuk-tuks, and usually air-conditioned.

Motorcycle taxi: The cheapest way of getting around, but for obvious reasons not as safe as being on four wheels.

Bus and tram: A cheap, but not necessarily comfortable, way of getting about. Most run between 5 am and 11 pm; night buses run from 3 am.

Boat: For island-hopping, the colorful long-tail boats are a thrill.

Car and motorcycle hire: While you'll find plenty of auto and motorcycle rental options on the island, renting a car to drive around Phuket is not recommended for all. The winding roads, coupled with the bad driving habits of both locals and tourists, make it an accident blackspot.

However, for seasoned and hopefully sober drivers, renting an auto is one of the best ways to get around the island on your own time and at your own pace. It helps if you are accustomed to driving on the left. A passport and an international driving permit are required.
