Dentists in San Luis Potosí

The ultimate guide to Dentists in San Luis Potosí

Last fact-checked: 24 February 2020

Book affordable, high-quality dental care with one of our dentists in San Luis Potosi. This Central Mexican city is steeped in history, most notably for its collection of colonial buildings, while the surrounding state of the same name provides ample opportunity for exploration and adventure.

Depending on the complexity and downtime involved in your procedure, you can make the most of it all either before after receiving dental treatment here.

San Luis Potosi in Brief

San Luis Potosi is a fine example of Mexico’s colonial architecture. This quaint town boasts a historic center filled with colorful parks, quaint plazas and laid-back esplanades. It is also historically significant to Mexico’s gaining of independence, playing an important role in some of the country’s major political upheavals.

But it's not only the state capital that is worthy of a visit: the surrounding countryside has three major tourist regions which promise rich and varied ecosystems, all of which are easily accessible from the capital.

The desert of the Altiplano features the ‘ghost town’ of Real de Catorce, a once-thriving mining community and a pilgrimage site for Huichol shamanists and Catholics now attracting other tourists drawn by its supposed spiritual energy. The Central Area, hugely popular with adventurists and ecotourists, features a forest climate and springs, as does the Huastec region, which is filled with lush jungle terrain and waterfalls.

The Sierra Gorda de Guanajuato mountains run north to south, creating a varied scenery of plains and valleys. Many of the towns and villages here still contain reminders of Mexico's colonial and pre-hispanic eras.

Where is San Luis Potosi?

San Luis Potosi shares the most borders with neighboring states in the country – nine in total. It is in the North-Central region of Mexico with Nuevo Leon to the north and Hidalgo to the south.

Why Visit a Dentist in San Luis Potosi?

If history, architecture, culture, the arts – not to mention the year-round pleasant climate – grab you, then San Luis Potosi will definitely appeal.

And while some of the city's most impressive buildings may be showing their age, the metropolitan area is generally well-developed, with modern facilities and amenities making for a comfortable stay.

Dental patients can be reassured that the quality of care will be on a par with what they're used to at home – but with one massive difference – the price.

Where to Stay?

Accommodation options across the state of San Luis Potosi are varied and plentiful, ranging from city-center hotels in the state capital to boutique hotels in nearby towns, such as Catorce and Xilitla, and luxury spas hidden away in the mountains.

From budget to blow-the-budget, you'll find something to suit in San Luis Potosi.

Is it Safe?

There is no US travel advisory to avoid the city of San Luis Potosi. However, care should be taken when traveling throughout the state, particularly on the highways at night.

Is the Quality of Care the Same as Back Home?

One of the main reasons Dental Departures was established was to provide a reliable platform for people to find quality, more affordable dental care abroad. Before we list any dentist on our site, we carry out a variety of checks that indicate whether a particular dentist or clinic is of a certain standard and quality.

These include not only criminal and legal checks but also qualifications and experience. You can see details of our dentists’ qualifications and experience under their listing on our site, as well as their professional memberships.

The dentists in Mexico listed on our site are all used to treating patients from overseas and provide high-quality care. We’ve found that many of our dentists are keen to demonstrate they are just as qualified and capable as their North American counterparts and will go the extra mile to prove this.

Many dentists are members of the American Dental Association, as well as international specialist organizations, such as the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Scroll through our photo galleries and you will also see that the clinics are modern, equipped with the latest dental technology and operate under strict hygiene and safety procedures.

What Happens If Something Goes Wrong? Does My Dental Care Come with a Guarantee?

It is a very rare event for something to go wrong with your dental care. However, no medical or dental procedure can ever be 100% guaranteed; that said, if something does go wrong, we will ensure that the issue resolved as quickly as possible.

All of our dentists have guarantees and warranties on the work they perform, as well as on the materials used during the course of your treatment. If you do experience a problem, they will fix it free-of-charge during the warranty period.

If you are concerned that the expense of traveling and accommodation might become a problem that arises at a later date should you have to come back to Mexico, it might be worthwhile purchasing a low-cost insurance plan for added peace of mind.

Do I Need to Speak Spanish?

Our dentists all speak English and you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting by throughout the state of San Luis Potosi without Spanish.

What Payment Methods Are Accepted by Most Dental Clinics?

The clinics we partner with in Mexico accept US cash. Most accept other forms of payments, including debit and credit cards, bank transfers and personal/traveler checks. You can check out each individual clinic listing on our site for full details.

Please note that a small processing fee of between 3-4% is usually payable on credit card transactions.

Is My US or Canadian Dental Insurance Accepted?

While our dentists in San Luis Potosi cannot usually accept your insurance directly, if your provider permits ‘out-of-network’ care, you may be able to reclaim your expenses when you return home.

Be sure to check with your provider and make sure you receive the appropriate paperwork to bring with you before you travel.

When Is the Best Time to Visit One of Our Dentists in San Luis Potosi?

Our dentists are open all year round, which leaves it up to you in terms of when to go.

The weather is spring-like most of the time – ideal for outdoor recreational activities or just sight-seeing. The rainy season runs from April to November, but in common with many monsoon areas, the rain tends to fall heavily and briefly in the late afternoon. In the winter months, you will probably need some warmer clothing for the evenings.

Is the Region Wheelchair-Accessible?

Like the rest of Mexico, some areas are more accessible when using a wheelchair than others. There are always plenty of hotels that are wheelchair-friendly and many of our dentists offer hotel pick-ups to make things a little easier.

Please get in touch to discuss your requirements–we can always find a way of getting you to see one of our dentists.

What Is the Downside? What Should I Know About Visiting?

Dental patients should note that sedation dentistry, unlike in the US and Canada, is not practiced as standard in Mexico; local anesthetic is the preferred method of pain relief. If you require sedation dentistry, many of our dentists are happy to provide this service, but an anesthesiologist will be required. For this reason, you will need to book in advance, and a further charge of between $400-$600 will be incurred.

Any prescription anti-anxiety medication, such as Valium, will also need to be ordered in advance and may not be guaranteed at each clinic.

What Else is There in San Luis Potosi?

San Luis Potosi City’s different historic architectural styles make for some particularly pretty and interesting walks. The buildings also lend themselves to a variety of cultural and artistic activities, including museums, such as the Museo Regional Potosino, originally part of a Franciscan monastery that was founded in 1590.

Religious buildings, including Baroque Cathedral, the Templo de San Franciso and the Templo del Carmen, are impressive, especially for history-buffs with guided tours available, while there is also a year-round calendar of events encompassing spiritual and religious festivals, dance festivals and markets and fairs.

The state of San Luis Potosi is home to a handful of other fascinating towns, including the Pueblos Magicos ‘Magical Towns’ of Real de Catorce and Xilitla. Real, as it is often abbreviated to, has many of its own architectural gems – from the 19th century pink stone bullring which commands magnificent views of the surrounding valley to the Hidalgo Gardens in the heart of the town, with its trees, shops and restaurants.

If time (and your specific treatment) permits, don't forget to check out quirky bars, such as Amor Y Paz, hidden behind the walls of Hotel el Real, serving an array of alcoholic tea infusions and mezcals.

The terrain around Real is perfect for a number of activities, including cycling and horse-riding. Tour operators in the area can provide all the equipment for your chosen mode of transport.

Xilitla is another magical town in the state. Las Pozas, the brainchild of English eccentric, poet and artist Edward James, is a collection of surrealist-inspired sculptures in the tropical jungle and is the main attraction here. However, balanced on a hilltop and surrounded by the green slopes of the Sierra Madre Oriental, you'll soon discover that Xilitla enjoys a striking rural setting, enticing many visitors to stay for a night or two and sample its cozy restaurants and laid-back ambiance.

San Luis Potosi is a large state, offering a variety of stunning and interesting locations for a dental vacation, ensuring you will always have plenty to occupy your time before, during and after your dental treatment.

We do, however, advise all patients to discuss with their chosen dentist in Mexico as to how much downtime is required after their treatment is over. Obviously, surgical procedures, like All-on-4 implants, require more recovery time than other procedures and so certain activities will be off-limits.
