Visiting Giza as a Dental Tourist

Giza and Cairo often get mixed up, and that’s probably due to their close proximity and the misconception as to where the Great Pyramid is actually located.

Giza is in fact a city of its own, situated on the west bank of the Nile, adjacent to Cairo. The Giza Plateau is where you’ll find some of Egypt’s most famous monuments, including three enormous pyramids built in the 26th century B.C.

The Great Pyramid, King Khufu’s tomb, is the largest of the three. Nearby, the Great Sphinx, depicting a man’s head on a lion’s body, can be admired from afar or inspected up as part of an organised tour, while the Solar Boat Museum showcases a newly restored cedar barge discovered near the Great Pyramid.

Both exasperating and enchanting, Giza can be crowded and chaotic. You can, however, enjoy the ancient sites without the throngs of people simply by going early, first thing in the morning to beat the tourist buses.

Elsewhere, there is nothing more relaxing than cruising the Nile to get away from the crowds—arriving in style at the next destination on your itinerary.

With an eclectic nightlife, a wealth of shopping experiences, entertainment options from traditional music to modern nightclubs and theme parks where you can cool down by splashing around in the water, Giza is a thrilling destination for visitors.

Dental tourists will find all the amenities they need to while away the time in-between visits to the dentist. Plus, with favourable exchange rates, Giza is more affordable than many other popular destinations in Europe.

Giza Travel Information

Giza is best known as home to the Great Pyramid and other pyramid complexes, as well as the Great Sphinx of Giza.

The Great Pyramid is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that survives today and is an awe-inspiring accolade to the achievements of the ancient Egyptians. At night, the pyramids are lit up and you can attend a light show tour with a traditional dinner if you want to make a night of it.

The Giza Citadel is another must-see spot. The Muhammad Ali Mosque is the highlight—its twin minarets are the most prominent feature when approaching from Downtown. Although the Muhammad Ali Mosque is to Giza what the Blue Mosque is to Istanbul, the nearby Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad Mosque is older and has fewer visitors.

The Islamic Giza district is packed with houses, mosques, shops and markets crowding its narrow streets. Take your time and see where your wandering takes you.

Khan el Khalil is Giza’s open-air souk where you can bargain hard for lamps, clothes, vases, antiques and perfumes.

Although you can visit throughout the year, Giza is a popular destination for escaping the cold, dank UK winters—and treating yourself to some sunshine without having to withstand Egypt’s blistering summer temperatures.

How to Get to Giza—Can I Fly?

Flights from around the UK take around five hours and start from around £300–400 return.

It should be noted that the Sphinx International Airport is the closest one to Giza; however, the only direct flights are to Cairo International Airport (from the UK and most other parts of Europe).

It is around 40 minutes away from Giza by taxi, bus or rental car.

Where to Stay in Giza?

Depending on what your plans and preferences are, it’s worth checking out Giza’s various districts before you book your accommodation—after all, this is a big city. For instance:

  • The Maadi district is upmarket, green and calming, and famed for its Nile-side promenade. Home to foreign embassies and ex-pats, it has become a foodie hotspot, and you can take some of the best felucca (boat) rides from here.

  • Although Downtown’s grandeur is a little faded, you can find a range of budget accommodation options here; it is also near Tahrir Square, Giza’s oldest bazaar and other tourist treats.

  • If you want views of the Pyramids, head to Giza, where you’ll find luxury hotels, as well as budget-friendly accommodations.
