Find out more about this treatment and how much you can save in this popular North African country.

When Would I Need a Root Canal?

A root canal procedure is necessary if harmful bacteria have invaded the soft centre of your tooth, which is where nerves and other tissues reside, causing an infection. In turn, this leads to inflammation, discomfort and pain, sometimes leading to a swelling in the gum, which may ooze pus.

This is why it is important to have regular check-ups at the dentist to ensure that any tooth decay is taken care of. If not, the decay creates a cavity which becomes bigger and eventually deep enough that it breaches the tooth’s centre, allowing the bacteria inside.

At this point, the only way of saving an infected tooth is with a root canal.

Is a Root Canal Painful?

The root canal treatment isn’t painful—it is carried out under a local anaesthetic so you won’t feel a thing. For many people that have endured pain or discomfort, the root canal treatment will provide relief. In many ways, it is similar to a filling, although the treatment takes longer.

What Is the Procedure for a Root Canal? How Long Will it Take?

The root canal procedure generally takes one or two visits to the dentist and with modern technologies, such as CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture) and 3D milling, it can sometimes be carried out in just a day or two.

Root canal treatment can be summarised in two stages as follows:

  1. During your first visit to the dentist, an assessment of the tooth is made using x-rays to confirm the extent of any disease. A local anaesthetic is given to numb the area around the tooth and the dentist makes a hole in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. The process of removing the infected and damaged material from the chamber, the tooth roots and the root canals begins. Once this is complete, the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and a temporary filling placed to seal the tooth.
  1. On your next visit, providing there is no sign of infection, the dentist will remove the temporary filling and fit either a permanent filling or a crown. With regular check-ups and a good oral hygiene regime, your root canal procedure should last a lifetime.
