Root Canal in Mexico

The ultimate guide to Root Canal in Mexico

Last fact-checked: 29 March 2020

Root canal treatment may be necessary to save your tooth. It is an expensive procedure and many patients are seeking— and finding—alternatives to the high costs at home by having their root canals in Mexico. It is a specialist procedure, and depending on a number of factors may take several weeks to complete. Mexico offers patients the convenience of either traveling to one of the border clinics on a daily basis for their care, or to combine their trip with a vacation at one of Mexico's stunning resorts.

Why Have Root Canals in Mexico?

For root canal treatment you will need to ensure you see a specialist in these procedures, called an endodontist. Although it is a straightforward procedure, it does involve skill, and if it isn’t done correctly not only might you be dealing with an infection causing you pain but you could end up losing your tooth anyway.

Booking through Dental Departures you will be able to choose a dentist who specializes in root canals from locations all over Mexico. Our website allows you to browse all our dentists and check their qualifications and specializations. That way you can be sure you will receive your treatment from the appropriate specialist.

The days of cheap dentistry in Mexico equating to sub-standard treatment are now long-gone. Of course, there are still dentists in Mexico you would choose not to go to – just as there are at home, but with the advent of dental tourism, many of the clinics who specialize in treating overseas patients offer superior services in state-of-the-art facilities.

Because root canal treatment can take up to a couple of weeks to complete, the opportunity of taking a holiday is something many patients undergoing this treatment cannot resist. We have endodontists in many popular vacation resorts including Cancun, Cozumel, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas. As well as being perfect for a beach holiday, Mexico is also one of the eighteen world’s megadiverse hotspots and offers an opportunity to explore the unique flora and fauna and habitats of endangered species.

How Long Do Root Canals Take in Mexico?

Root canals may be completed in a couple of appointments, but they are usually up to 5 days apart.

The root canal procedure will be carried out on your first appointment. It may take some hours, depending on the size of the tooth and how many roots it has. Each root has to be removed and the canal cleared of debris and thoroughly cleaned. Only after each root canal has been treated can they be filled.

Because of the risk of infection, your dentist will only put in a temporary filling at first. After a few days you will return, and provided there is no evidence of infection the temporary fillings will be removed and the permanent fillings put in. If your tooth is large you may have to have a crown put on top to strengthen the tooth. If this is the case you will need to return again in a few days after the crown has been made by the lab for this to be fitted.

Patients who have an infection prior to the commencement of their root canal treatment are advised to take antibiotics at least 10 days before your treatment commences. These can be obtained from a dentist at home.

What Is the Cost Comparison of Root Canals in the US and Canada to Mexico?

The cost will depend on the size of your tooth, number of canals, filling material and whether a crown is needed. Prices are around $1,300 in the US, compared to around $300 in Mexico.

For an affordable solution to root canal problems, Mexico is definitely one to consider.
