The ultimate guide to Fillings in Ubud
Last fact-checked: 7 March 2020
Make the most of your holiday to Bali and save money on everyday dental care while you’re there. You can get dental fillings in Ubud for less than a third of the price you would expect to pay at home—ensuring your dental health is kept in check without paying through the nose.
Many first-world countries, like Australia, are facing a dental care crisis. Dental costs vary dramatically with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare finding that almost 50% of adults between the ages of 25 and 44 delay or avoid a trip to the dentist because of the cost.
Good dental health can only be maintained with regular visits to the dentist—with remedial treatments carried out once problems are detected. Thus, tooth decay can be stopped in its tracks with a filling, preventing the decay from becoming bigger and more problematic, possibly requiring a root canal to save the tooth.
However, with figures varying by as much as $300 just for a simple check-up, it’s easy to see why many people put going to the dentist on the back burner, especially if they don’t have a noticeable problem. And we say ‘noticeable’ because many dental problems are not detectable in the early stages as little pain or discomfort is associated with them.
Why Are Dental Fillings Beneficial to Dental Health?
Our teeth are constantly being attacked by the acid produced by bacteria that live in our mouths. Sugary, sticky foods and drinks exacerbate the problem because they create the ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. The acid produced by bacteria erodes tooth enamel and creates plaque. The result: tooth decay.
While regular brushing and flossing help to remove the stickiness from the teeth, making it more difficult for the bacteria to grab hold of the surface, the crevices in between the teeth, particularly around the gum line, benefit from regular professional cleaning by your dentist. Otherwise, the plaque hardens to a calculus (tartar) which is impossible to remove by brushing and can only be removed by your dentist or hygienist.
Tooth decay can easily be remedied by removing the decay and filling the cavity. If it isn’t, the decay becomes more widespread. Eventually, the soft pulp chamber in the centre of the tooth will be breached. Once the bacteria can enter the chamber the soft tissue and nerves become infected, which is when a root canal treatment is required.
So, you can see why fillings are so important.

What Is the Procedure for a Filling? How Long Will it Take?
The dental fillings procedure is relatively straightforward and is over in a matter of minutes for most people. Obviously, your dentist will first want to inspect your mouth to ensure that a filling is the right course of action. An x-ray may be taken to determine the exact location and extent of the decay. The dentist will talk you through the filling materials to seal the cavity and prevent further decay.
Most people tend to opt for tooth-coloured fillings these days, which are made of either composite or porcelain. However, controversial silver amalgam is still available, as well as other materials, including gold. Factors such as the position of the cavity, your budget and cosmetic considerations will all have a bearing on the choice of material.
The procedure begins by your dentist administering local anaesthetic to the area around the tooth to numb it. The decayed parts of the tooth are removed with a hand-piece or laser. The area is cleaned to remove any debris and bacteria and the filling gel is applied to the cavity and left to harden for a few moments. The tooth is then shaped and polished to complete the procedure.
