What are dental implants?

Dental implants are false tooth roots which are surgically inserted into the jawbone. They consist of three parts – the implant, the abutment, and the crown. The abutment joins the crown (or false tooth) to the implant.

After the implant is inserted is begins to fuse with the bone in a process called osseointegration, which provides a secure base for the crown.

Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth, or several can be used to support a removeable denture.

Implants can last a lifetime if you look after them properly. They don’t need any special treatment, but you will have to brush, floss and see your dentist regularly for check-ups.

What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

They are a permanent and esthetically pleasing way of replacing missing teeth – no-one will ever know they are not your own – unless you tell them.

For anyone who has been used to wearing dentures, dental implants will feel a lot more secure. Unlike dentures which may become ill-fitting and loose, dental implants will stay fixed – so you will have no problems worrying about your teeth slipping when you smile, chew and talk.

From a health point of view, they do have some benefit in helping to prevent gum recession and bone loss, thus preventing further tooth loss.

Dental implants are the long-term perfect solution for replacing missing teeth, but they are one of the most expensive procedures to have done, which prevents a lot of people from benefiting from them. However, at our Patong Beach dentists, dental implants cost considerably less – and you also get the benefit of being in a lively holiday resort while you recuperate.

What is involved in the procedure for dental implants?

For the implant procedure to be successful you will need a thorough assessment of your teeth and gums using digital x-rays and/or CT scans to ensure they are healthy and your jawbone viable to support the implant. If the jawbone is found to have bone loss, which is quite common, it doesn’t mean you won’t be able to have an implant procedure, it just means you will have to have a bone loss procedure before the implant treatment begins.

This means, of course, that you will have to factor in the cost of another trip. It is usually at least 6 months after the bone graft before the implant procedure can take place.

The actual implant procedure itself is routine enough. A cut is made in the gum and a small hole drilled in the jaw bone. The implant is placed in the socket, the gum stitched over and left to heal for around 6 months. You will be given a healing denture to wear in the meantime while the process of osseointegration takes place.

After a number of months you will go back to your dentist to have the abutment placed and the crown attached.

Is the procedure painful?

Dental implants are usually placed under a local anesthetic, but sedation can be used if you are at all worried, and if you are having a bone graft it may be preferred. Although the procedure isn’t painful you may experience discomfort akin to a tooth extraction, and you may have some swelling.

How long does the procedure take in Patong Beach?

The dental implant procedure is made up of the implant itself, an abutment and a crown. The implant is inserted into the jaw bone and act as an artificial, stable tooth root.  The abutment joins the crown to the implant. The crown is an artificial tooth that fits on top of the abutment, created to match your other teeth in shape and color.

The implant is inserted on your first visit. Unless an extraction is required, this process usually can be achieved in one day.

Your next trip will take place between three and six months later. This is so the bone and implant fuse together in a process called osseointegration, which provides a stable base for your crown. The abutment and crown are placed on this trip.
