The ultimate guide to Crowns in Alicante
Last fact-checked: 18 February 2020
Fix your broken, chipped or damaged teeth for less with dental crowns in Alicante, where you can save around 65% over what you would expect to pay at home. The Province of Alicante is one of the most popular destinations in Spain for British and Irish holidaymakers, with the city of Alicante and nearby resorts along the coast delivering an alluring mix of culture and laid-back time in the sun.
The city of Alicante is situated in the middle of the Costa Blanca (White Coast). The historic city is known for its narrow streets that wind their way down through the old part of town all the way from the Santa Barbara Castle—the medieval fortress that stands high above the city.
The province of Alicante also boasts miles of white, sandy beaches sloping into the glittering Mediterranean Sea and is studded with large, well-developed tourist destinations, like Benidorm and upmarket towns, like Moraira. The natural beauty of the area, the weather and the fact that the towns and resorts along this stretch of coast all offer something for everyone make this area a huge draw. So, if you’re considering combining a holiday with affordable dental work, then a trip to Alicante ticks all the important boxes.
Why Would I Need a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns are used to treat a number of dental issues. Sometimes referred to as ‘caps,’ the dental crown is placed over a tooth to provide strength or improve appearance; a crown can also be used to replace a missing tooth. A crown may be required to:
● Add strength to a tooth with a large filling or root canal where the removal of a large amount of decay has compromised the tooth’s structure
● Protect a tooth that is cracked, chipped or damaged
● Restore a broken tooth
● Replace a missing tooth as part of a dental implant or as a dental bridge
● Improve a tooth’s appearance
Why Have Dental Crowns in Alicante?
- The dental crowns procedure won’t take up too much of your free time, although you will probably have to factor in two visits to the dentist—the first for assessment and for your dentist to take impressions of your mouth to send to a laboratory where your crown is made; and the second for the fitting of your crown. Each visit should take around an hour.
- After your crown procedure, you should experience little or no downtime, which means you can enjoy your holiday to the full without any after-effects.
- Alicante is easily accessible from the UK and Eire with flight durations of less than 3 hours and plenty of low-cost daily flights from all over the British Isles.
- You can make substantial savings on the cost of dental crowns in Alicante compared to home.

Can I Expect to Receive Good Quality Dental Care in Alicante?
For many people, any kind of dental care is met with apprehension, and more so when travelling overseas for it. However, Spain now provides some of the best healthcare services in the world, and, as a member of the European Union, is subject to strict guidelines and regulations just like any other EU member state. Dentists in Spain receive a good education and training, and they must be registered with the General Council of Colleges of Dentistry and Stomatology to practice.
The provision of dental care in Spain is on a private practice basis. This effectively means that dental clinics are constantly vying for customers, which, in turn, increases competition to provide not only good-quality services but also value-for-money.
Visitors from the UK who are used to NHS dental facilities will see an immediate difference in the dental facilities in Spain. The clinics are very modern and high-tech with the latest technologies, such as CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture), 3D/CT scanning and digital x-rays all available.
Despite all this, it is still worth spending a little time researching your options to find a dental facility you trust. One way of doing this is through Dental Departures. All the clinics listed on our website have already been through our pre-screening process. These checks include dentist qualifications, professional memberships, legal/malpractice records and onsite visits. With patient reviews, prices, clinic photos and location maps also published on our site you can easily choose a trustworthy facility with complete confidence.

How Long Will the Dental Crowns Procedure Take?
At your first visit to the dentist (after your dentist confirms that a crown is the right course of action), you will be asked about what material you would like the crown to be made from.
The procedure for dental crowns usually takes place over two visits to the dentist. The first visit will involve an assessment, x-rays and a discussion about the material options. Most are made from porcelain or other options that closely match the look of your own teeth. Each has its pros and cons: porcelain is a good cosmetic choice but prone to fracture; porcelain-fused-to-metal is one of the less expensive options and durable but the metal underneath the porcelain may cast a grey shadow on the tooth; zirconia is one of the newest, aesthetically-pleasing options but it’s expensive.
Next, the tooth is prepared to receive the crown. The tooth is filed down to accommodate the crown and ensure a good fit. You will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area, and once the tooth is prepared, impressions are taken to send to the laboratory where your crown is made. A temporary crown will be placed until your new one is ready to fit.
Once your dentist receives the crown, the temporary crown is removed, and the dentist places the permanent one over your tooth to check the fit. Any minor adjustments are made before the crown is cemented permanently in place.
Same-Day Crowns
CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture) technology allows some dental clinics (the ones that offer it) to provide same-day crowns; the design, manufacturing and fitting all takes place in the dentist’s office and the entire process can be completed in as little as two hours.
