The cost of dental crowns is proving to be prohibitively expensive throughout North America, with many patients turning to established dental tourism destinations, such as Cancun, to have their dental work carried out at vastly reduced prices.
Cancun is only a few hours' flying time from the United States, making it reasonably accessible, even if you only need to spend a few days here. However, as one of the world’s most visited tourist destinations, it's always going to be tempting to extend your stay in Cancun so as to combine your dental work with a full vacation prior to your treatment.
Of course, you have Cancun’s beautiful beaches, the Caribbean Sea, exquisite restaurants and shopping to suit all tastes–but there is so much more to see and do in the surrounding countryside. Take to the golf course, explore the rivers in a kayak or, for the adrenaline junkies, try zip-lining, abseiling and a whole host of other fun activities.
Why Have Dental Crowns in Cancun?
You can expect the quality of dental work in Cancun to be just as good as what you'd back home. Many dental clinics and labs here are modern and well-equipped with the newest dental technology, and highest-quality dental materials. All of our listed dentists are quality-checked for their experience and qualifications, and you will find that many are also members of the American Dental Association (ADA) and subject to the same professional standards as their US counterparts.
With prices for dental crowns up to two-thirds lower in Cancun, it is certainly possible to undergo dental treatment and enjoy a luxurious vacation – and still pay less than you would at home for just one crown.
Cancun is a wonderful destination with first-class tourist facilities. As you would expect, this popular seaside resort offers sample shopping, restaurants, and bars to sample, as well as the astounding coastline. Just outside of Cancun, take your pick from a range of recreational activities, like ecotours along the Riviera Maya and cultural tours around Chichen Itza, Tulum and other Mayan archaeological sites.
You will never be short of things to do and see while waiting for the lab work on your crowns to be completed.
How Long Do Dental Crowns Take in Cancun?
If your dentist has an onsite CAD/CAM lab, you may be able to have your crowns made in just one day.
During your first appointment, the dentist will clean and shape your tooth. Impressions are then made and sent to the lab to custom make your crown. In the meantime, your dentist may fit a temporary crown to your tooth.
At the second appointment, your temporary crown will be removed and replaced with the new one. Your dentist will file the tooth to ensure the correct fit and shape. Once you are both happy with it, they will cement the new crown in place.
There are a number of different materials that can be used to make your crown.
- The most affordable option is the porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM). These are durable and strong, but the least cosmetically desirable.
- Full porcelain and ceramic provide the best natural appearance but are the least durable material—prone to chips or cracks. They aren’t recommended for back teeth.
- Zirconia is the strongest and most expensive material used to make crowns. These have a natural appearance, mimicking the translucency of natural teeth.
Your dentist will discuss the merits of each type of material and guide you in your decision-making process.
How Much Can I Save on Dental Crowns in Cancun Compared to the US and Canada?
Both the size and material used will affect the cost. Crowns start at around $1,150 in the United States but are around $350 in Cancun. This goes up to $1,600 for zirconia in the US and $480 for the same in Cancun.
With a life-span of up to 15 years for zirconia crowns you will be able to afford these high-quality crowns by traveling to Cancun - and still save yourself a fortune on the price you’d pay at home.
