Why Would I Need a Dental Crown?
Crowns are used to treat a number of common dental problems. Sometimes referred to as ‘caps’ because they typically fit over an existing tooth, crowns can be used in the following circumstances:
● To restore a broken or damaged tooth
● To protect a tooth that has been compromised after a large dental filling or root canal
● Disguise misshapen, discoloured or uneven teeth
● Replace a missing tooth as part of a dental implant
● Replace a missing tooth as part of a dental bridge
What Are the Advantages of Dental Crowns?
Crowns have a number of advantages over other treatments (or foregoing treatment):
● Weakened teeth are often sensitive, which can be relieved with a crown.
● Crowns can dramatically improve the appearance of your teeth and smile.
● Custom-made, they will fit you perfectly.
● The dental crowns procedure is relatively straightforward and quick—especially if your dental clinic has CAD/CAM technology.
What Are Dental Crowns Made From? Can I Choose the Material?
Dental crowns can be made from various materials —all with their own pros and cons. Here’s what to know about your options:
● Most patients tend to opt for tooth-coloured materials, such as composite, porcelain and zirconia.
● While zirconia is incredibly strong and mimics natural teeth well, it is the most expensive material.
● Porcelain is cheaper but is prone to chipping.
● Composite is the cheapest and not as hard-wearing as porcelain or zirconia.
● Amalgam and other metals, like gold, are are not to everybody’s taste, but they are long-lasting and hard-wearing.

What Happens During the Dental Crowns Procedure?
The procedure for dental crowns typically involves two visits to the dentist. During the first visit, your tooth will be prepared to receive the crown. The crown will need fit comfortably over your existing tooth, which means that some of your teeth might be pared down slightly by the dentist, under local anaesthetic. Once the tooth has been prepared, your dentist will take impressions of your mouth to send to a laboratory where your crown is made to measure.
Once your dentist has received the newly-made crown from the lab, it’s time for you to return to have it fitted. This is a straightforward procedure whereby the dentist places the crown(s) over your tooth/teeth to check for fit and colour. Minor adjustments will be made by the dentist before the crown is cemented in place, and bonded permanently with a light-activated adhesive.
If your dentist offers CAD/CAM technology, then the whole procedure can often be carried out in one sitting. CAD/CAM allows the dentist to take digital images of the inside of your mouth, which can be edited on a computer screen in front of you. Thus, you will be able to see how your crown looks in your mouth before it has even been made, let alone fitted!
You and the dentist can alter shape, size and colour on the computer, and once happy, the image files are sent to an onsite milling machine that makes your crown while you wait.
Can I Rely on the Dental Crowns Treatments in Zagreb?
The standard of dental care in Zagreb is generally excellent. Dental training in Croatia is of a high standard, with dentists studying at the University of Zagreb School of Dental Medicine—the only school for dentists in the country. Once qualified, in order to practice dentistry they must be registered with the Croatian Dental Association, the profession’s governing body. Throughout the rest of their careers, ongoing training is required to keep up with the latest technologies and techniques, and specialist dentists take further qualifications in their area of interest.
Regardless of the above reassurances, you should always do your own due diligence to find a reliable clinic you feel comfortable with. Not sure where to start? Then let Dental Departures come to your assistance.

Are Crowns a Good Treatment for Dental Tourists?
Dental crowns are a good treatment for dental tourists, particularly those short on time thanks to the availability of CAD/CAM technology, allowing you to be in and out of the clinic in just one day.
The treatment isn’t painful, and you will be able to return to your everyday activities within hours of the treatment (you’ll just have to wait a short time for the local anaesthetic to wear off before eating and drinking.)
This means you’ll have plenty of time to spend enjoying your time in Zagreb—a lovely city with narrow, winding streets that are lined with shops, restaurants, bars and galleries. Awarded one of the ‘Best in Europe’ by Lonely Planet in 2017, it is overlooked by many visitors who head for the more obvious attractions of Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast.
So, it’s worth your while visiting now before the rest of the world inevitably catches on to Zagreb’s charms.
